Mass Intentions

A Mass intention is the specific purpose for which a priest offers the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. While every Mass is an infinite act of worship offered to God, the Church allows us to unite particular intentions to each celebration—offering the spiritual benefits of the Mass for a person, group, or need.

These intentions are often requested for:

  • The repose of the soul of someone who has died, asking God’s mercy and peace for them in eternity
  • The healing or well-being of someone who is ill or in need
  • Thanksgiving for blessings received
  • A special intention, such as guidance, peace, or help in a time of trial

When a priest offers Mass with a specific intention, he is lifting that person or cause up in a unique and personal way—asking God to apply the abundant graces of the Eucharist to their need. It is a beautiful expression of our belief in the communion of saints, and in the power of prayer to transcend time and space.

You do not need to be present at the Mass for the intention to be effective—God, in His mercy, honors the sincerity of the request and the sacrifice offered on behalf of the individual.

To request a Mass intention, most parishes offer a way to submit a name and date—sometimes with a small stipend. This ancient practice remains one of the most powerful and comforting gifts we can offer to others, living or deceased: the gift of the Eucharist.
